Squat Smarter for Strength and Injury Resilience
Pain can be frustrating—especially when it sidelines you from the workouts and lifestyle you love. But here’s the truth:
➡️ Not all pain means harm.
➡️ Pain intensity doesn’t always match the injury.
Understanding your pain is key to lasting recovery.
The International Association for the Study of Pain defines it as:
“An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage.”
In short—your brain is the gatekeeper, deciding whether to sound the alarm.
Instead of guessing (or ignoring it), ask yourself—or your provider—these 5 key questions:
How did it start?
Was there one event (fall, accident) or a gradual build-up? Most pain comes from repeated stress, not one big injury.
How long has it lasted?
Timing helps determine the healing stage and guides treatment.
What does it feel like?
Sharp, burning, achy, stabbing? Does it stay put or radiate? These clues reveal what’s really going on.
What makes it better or worse?
If certain movements change the pain, it’s often musculoskeletal—and often treatable without surgery or meds. Constant, unchanging pain? See a doctor.
What do I believe about my pain?
Fear, stress, and past injuries shape how you experience pain. Understanding this mind-body link boosts recovery.
