Feeling Sluggish After Meals? It May Be Your Blood Sugar Levels

Feeling Sluggish After Meals? It May Be Your Blood Sugar Levels

A Simple Guide to Keeping your Blood Sugar Steady

Blood sugar is the main source of energy your body uses to fuel your brain, muscles, and everyday activities.

It’s normal for blood sugar to rise after eating. The goal isn’t to keep it perfectly flat, but to avoid big spikes and crashes when possible.

A spike and a crash of blood sugar may make you:

-Feel tired or sluggish
-Have difficulty concentrating
-Feel hungry right after eating

-Crave sugary and carb-rich foods
-Feel irritable and have mood swings

Here are a few simple ways to support steadier blood sugar throughout the day:

  1. Build balanced meals
Pair carbohydrates with protein, fiber, and healthy fats. For example: Instead of eating toast with jam, try eating whole-grain toast with eggs and avocado.
  2. Eat more fiber
Including more high fiber foods like vegetables, beans, lentils, berries, whole grains, nuts and seeds, can help slow the absorption of glucose and keep you feeling fuller for longer.
  3. Move after meals
A 10-15 minute walk after eating can help your muscles use glucose for energy and limit a blood sugar spike.
  4. Watch your drinks
Make water your go-to drink. The added sugar in sodas, sweet teas, energy drinks, and sugary coffee can often lead to a big spike and crash of blood sugar.
  5. Prioritize sleep Getting 7-9 hours of sleep supports healthy blood sugar regulation, appetite, and energy levels.
  6. Manage stress
Stress can affect blood sugar, so make time for simple resets – walking, deep breathing, stretching, getting outside, and connecting with others.

Most importantly, don’t aim for perfection. Small, consistent habits can make a big difference: Balance your meals. Move your body. Drink your water. Sleep well. Manage stress. Repeat!
